At the end of the War, it was not uncommon for the more thoughtful (and literate) veterans to sit down and record brief histories of their units, lists of their comrades, of other notes for posterity. Here is a list of all 41 engagements (with dates) in which the 2nd Mass participated, written and signed in the hand of J. D. McCarthy of the Hundred. Document is dated July 8, 1865 and placed at Fairfax Courthouse, Virginia. They mustered out twelve days later.
